Abstract

This study investigates the growing prevalence of urban homelessness and its association with the formation of high-risk zones in Vancouver, British Columbia. Utilizing spatial crime data, housing insecurity indicators, and public health reports, this research identifies the socio-economic and structural drivers contributing to the concentration of vulnerable populations in specific urban areas. Particular focus is placed on regions such as the Downtown Eastside, where homelessness, substance abuse, and public safety issues are critically interlinked. The study employs a mixed-method approach combining geospatial analysis, time-series data interpretation, and local policy evaluation. Based on the findings, the paper offers targeted policy recommendations aimed at enhancing housing stability, community safety, and integrated social support services. This research contributes to a broader understanding of urban vulnerability and informs evidence-based policymaking in Canadian metropolitan contexts.

  • This is such a fascinating topic. Your attempt to uncover the structural factors behind homelessness distribution within the city through spatial analysis is incredibly meaningful. I’m particularly interested in the data sources you used—especially the crime data and housing instability indicators. Would you mind sharing where you obtained them? I’m exploring a similar line of research, so it would be really helpful.
